It is not Garmin’s newest beginner watch anymore, and it is not the most advanced Forerunner. But at the right sale price, it gives new runners the pieces that actually matter: reliable GPS, useful workout suggestions, Garmin Coach plans, strong battery life, and a bright AMOLED screen that does not feel dated.

This review was inspired by a Reddit runner who had just finished a first 5K, was using Runna, and wanted to know whether the Forerunner 165 was enough or whether it made more sense to stretch to the Forerunner 170 or 265S. What the Forerunner 165 gets right

The Forerunner 165’s biggest win is that it feels like a real running watch, not a lifestyle smartwatch trying to do running on the side.
